The John Deere 6R 175 manages to pack ‘big tractor’ features into a frame that doesn’t feel like manoeuvring a cruise ship in a bathtub
Sitting in that ‘sweet spot’ of the mid-frame 6R lineup, this machine aims to be the ultimate Jack or Jill of all trades – light enough to not disappear into the unpredictable peat, but punchy enough to make a 20-tonne silage trailer respect its authority.
Engine
Under the bonnet sits the familiar 6.8L, 6-cylinder John Deere PowerTech engine. With a rated power of 175hp, this climbs up to a maximum output of 215hp when the boost (IPM) kicks in when hydraulic power is needed (with hydraulic IPM), during PTO work at over 2km/hr, or when travelling at speeds of 15km/hr +.
Best of all for Kiwi contractors, the 6-cylinder 6R series (except the 165 and 185 models) are available as a Tier 3 option, meaning no AdBlue. You get money back for selecting this too – a win, win.
Transmission

AutoPowr (IVT) with the CommandPRO Joystick – this is where shift happens, from 50 metres per hour up to a healthy 55km/h on the road to be exact, all with the smoothness of a politician in election year.
The 6R series does have plenty of transmission choices with three powershift options (both 40 and 50km/hr) AutoQuad Plus (20×20), CommandQuad Plus (20×20), and DirectDrive (24×24) as well as the AutoPowr (IVT) – more on this functionality soon.
Hydraulics and Rear Linkage

Hydraulic Flow is standard at 114L/min (optional 155L/min) and 9550kg rear lift with 4000kg lift front. Spools wise, up to six at the rear and two at the front, plus front and rear ISOBUS connectivity means you can plug in more kit than an All-Blacks’ physio tent. Factory-fitted loader brackets are also available for integration and in the rear PTO department, you can choose either 540/540E/1000 rpm or 540E/1000/1000E.
XXL ComfortView Cab

In terms of build quality, the 6R XXL cab continues to set the standard with 3.33m² of space. The leather steering wheel feels good in the hand, with direction changes from either the left-hand shuttle lever or the CommandPRO. Other nifty features of the CommandPRO are the maximum speed activation (by pushing the stick forward past the detent) and also quick speed range adjustment (by turning the scroll wheel). Pulling the lever into the gate closest to your leg is the inching mode – great for implement hitching. Also superb is the ability to switch between joystick and pedal modes, making driving incredibly easy and customisable. The active standstill with automatic parking brake are also fantastic additions, as are the joystick’s numerous functions and up to five toggle switches, which can be individually assigned.
The Tech Stack

While the iron is impressive, if you think tractors are just about horsepower and hydraulics, think again. The real ‘secret sauce’ in the 6R is the guidance and automation. You’re as close to autonomous driving as can be, while still being physically in the cab – let’s break it down with a healthy disregard for sales brochure hyperbole.
AutoTrac: The bread and butter – the tractor steers itself and keeps rows surgically straight. With autosteer engaged, the seat can swivel up to 40° to the right so you can keep an eye on the implement or equally as important, contemplate life’s many mysteries.
AutoTrac Turn Automation (ATTA): This is where things get really clever. It takes the stress out of the headlands by automatically planning and executing the turn. It even manages the speed and implements lift/lower. You can adjust arc and angle depending on if it is a mounted or trailed implement.
G5 Plus Display + Extended Monitor: The G5 Plus is a 12.8-inch display and is close to perfect. Not only is it HD crisp, even in strong sunlight, but the boot-up time after starting the engine is impressively short too. Whether it’s data transfer of jobs, maps for drilling or even just navigating to different fields, it’s now even better thanks to the familiar Google Maps interface. John Deere is simply ahead of the competition when it comes to this sort of tech.
Adding the G5 Extended Monitor is a no-brainer for contractors. You can have your guidance on one screen and your ISOBUS controls or tractor functionality on the other. That way you can keep an eye on everything except the weather, which it won’t fix by the way.

Operations Center & JDLink: Think of the Operations Center as the ‘brain’ (in the cloud). JDLink wirelessly sends data from the tractor to your phone or office. You can see where the tractor is, how much fuel it’s using, and even send ‘Work Plans’ directly to the cab so the driver just needs to hit the GO button. It also now has the added benefit (thanks to Elon) of ‘JDLink Boost’ using Starlink for real-time monitoring, updates, and connectivity in the middle of nowhere. It’s perfect for Kiwi contractors who are almost always precisely in the middle of nowhere!
Expert Alerts & Remote Display Access (RDA): Expert Alerts use predictive analytics (based on a series of diagnostic trouble codes) to tell your dealer a part is going to fail *before* it actually breaks. You can then choose to replace the part or play Russian roulette to see how many other parts it can take down with it when it does Chernobyl itself. If the operator gets stuck on a setting, you can use RDA to see exactly what they see on their screen from your office and talk them through it. Yep, you could use video calling on a mobile but it’s not as cool – trust me.

AutoTrac Implement Guidance: This is the piece that brings it all together, keeping the implement on track, even in hilly ground moving the tractor offline to keep the implement online even when drifting. The best part is that it uses the implement receiver to make section control super accurate. This means you can back the planter up into corners with confidence. It’s got your back, your front, and your sides – so the inputs go where they’re supposed to, not just where the tractor’s pointing.
AutoPath: Possibly saving the best until last here folks – this is a beautiful thing where the lead tractor (generally) sets the boundary, markers, headland manoeuvres, guidance lines etc and then using AutoPath (Boundaries) and AutoPath (Rows), subsequent machines that enter that paddock can hook straight onto that information and you are into it. Put simply, less faffing, more farming.
Verdict
If you’re looking for a tractor that can transition from precision planting to heavy haulage without breaking a sweat, the John Deere 6R 175 is definitely one for the shortlist. It’s well-built, comfortable, tech-heavy, and, most importantly, it’s the business.
