With its ‘neo-retro’ styling, when the Massey Ferguson 8S Xtra was announced, punters waited with half anticipation, half speculation, and a healthy dollop of envy
I hadn’t seen this much interest since someone tried to sell a lifestyle block with a duck pond and called it ‘lakefront’. The first thing you notice is the 24cm ‘void’ between the engine hood and the cab. This is not new as it was also on the OG 8S, but is a design choice Massey calls the ‘Protect-U’ cab. With an overall area of 3.4m³, it’s more like a sanctuary, and as for quiet? It’s church-like quiet at just 68 decibels.
In the world of contracting, where you spend more time in the tractor seat than in your own living room for six months of the year, this is a gamechanger. It’s not just for looks either; this design physically isolates the operator from the heat, vibration, and the mechanical scream of a working engine.
Engine
Scratch that, as the engine itself actually doesn’t have a screamy vibe at all – instead it has a power curve that feels as smooth as a freshly shorn sheep. All six models from 205-305 (rated) horsepower share the same 7.4-litre, six-cylinder AGCO Power engine. This has been a staple and well proven here in New Zealand conditions with very favourable fuel economy stats.
On the 225 Xtra model that we tested, it boasted 245hp (max) thanks to the +20hp of boost. The boost has some nuance in the fact it is progressively switched on from 6km/hr. Put simply, from 0-6km/hr there’s no boost; from 6-18km/hr there is progressive boost; and from 18km/hr + there is full boost.
Another nifty addition is the ViscTronic fan with reversible option. This does increase the noise levels slightly but also improves overall efficiency. Another fun cooling fact is that the 24cm gap between the engine and cab actually aids engine cooling. It’s good for the tractor and the operator – that feels downright revolutionary.
Transmission

Right: The premium Grammar seat with sliding headrest
The Dyna-VT is the chosen one in terms of transmissions on the 8S Xtra, purely down to take rates and why not? The ML260 transmission is a familiar and proven bit of hardware, complete with two travel ranges (I/II), essentially field and road mode (0-50km/hr).
You also get the benefits of separate oil to the 85L hydraulic tank, which has impressive stats (we will touch on that soon). In terms of operation, main control is via the Multipad Lever. This can be driven in either stick or pedal mode, where lever/shuttle and pedal aggression can all be customised. It is also cleverly paired with Dynamic Tractor Management (DTM) where the tractor automatically adjusts engine speed to match the load.
Driving modes include automatic mode, which kicks in under load for transport and PTO, and depending on your application will prioritise PTO speed over forward speed. F/R shuttle is taken care of from either the Power Control lever on the left or on the armrest-mounted Multipad Lever.
Hydraulics/Linkage/PTO

Right: The PROTECT-U Cab boasts 3.4m³ of cab area
The 205L/min CCLS pump is where it’s at – for even the most demanding implements with full flow, it’s delivered at just 1650 revs. The Dyna-VT models also get the luxury of an optional fifth rear spool and can chose from either 540E/1000 or 1000/1000E. Full spec in the hydraulic department looks like: five rear, two front spools, the rear featuring decompression levers while lifting muscle tips 10T on the rear and 4.8T on the front – all very respectable.
In terms of in-cab functionality, there are many possibilities thanks to the Multipad lever with the micro-joystick, the secondary joystick, or the paddles. All can be customised thanks to the onboard Datatronic 5 touchscreen display.
PROTECT – U Cab

This large condo of a cab deserves every bit of praise it gets for space and visibility, with 6.6m² of glass, a forward tilted windscreen, a large wiper field with a vertical, parallel-controlled wiper and overall internal cab area of 3.4m³. Put simply – it doesn’t get any better.
What about the air con I hear you say, these big cabs get hot? Not today brah; 14 vents located logically around the cab keep it nice and cool, and better still, is a ventilation system that meets Cat IV.
The nice, bright A pillar display in lieu of a traditional dash certainly improves the view along the super slim bonnet, while the main 9-inch Datatronic 5 display has a tablet feel and function about it. Better still, you can now have not one, but two displays.
The Fieldstar 5 touchscreen works in conjunction with the Datatronic 5, allowing you to control Tractor to Implement Management, as well as Tractor Implement Management ISOBUS, two times video inputs, and MF AutoTurn functionality where cleverly, the GPS position can be used to trigger a sequence. Another clever function is automatic trailer steering lock, which kind of does what it says on the tin – it’s turned on at a desired speed, and it auto turns itself off in reverse – all good stuff.

Right: A handy greasing chart inside the left-hand step
Other features worth mentioning:
- The payload of over 6T on our test tractor is impressive for this power bracket
- Wheelbase of 3.05m offers improved stability with or without implements, maintains high levels of traction in the field and increased comfort on the road
- The suspended front axle and sprung cab suspension offer a superb ride
- The choice of flanged or floating bar rear axles options are available
- ISOBUS implements can be controlled directly using the Multipad lever
- Up to 20 LED work lights are available for burning the midnight oil
- MF Section Control handles up to 96 sections
- MF Connect telemetry provides real-time data to your phone. You can see where the tractor is, how much fuel it’s burning, and if the operator is ‘taking a long lunch’ or more importantly, got home safely.
Verdict

In a country where the weather is unpredictable and a contractor’s reputation is only as good as the work they leave behind, and in a world full of flashy marketing and tractors that promise the world, the ‘Xtra’ badge isn’t just marketing fluff. It’s Massey Ferguson’s way of saying they’ve listened to the Jacks and Jills of all trades in the paddock who wanted more tech and less ‘tractor noise’. So, if you value your spine and your hearing, this is the throne you’ve been waiting for. Bien joué Massey, very well done indeed.
