Southern Field Days 2018 is fast approaching, and we bring you a sneak peek of what you can expect to see there

The newest tractor and machinery releases will be revealed at the Southern Field Days this month in Waimumu (12km from Gore, Southland). The event (14 to 16 February) is a three-day showcase of the latest in rural technology, equipment, and specialist knowledge from around the world.

From tractor pull and digger competitions, to working demonstrations and the Southern Man event, the venue will also be home to some of the freshest Kiwi innovations as part of the Rural Life Farm Innovation Awards.

As well as all things agricultural, the on-field action kicks off with the Farmlands Cup pre-season rugby game between the Highlanders and the Crusaders at Fred Booth Family Park (adjacent to the Field Days site) on Thursday, 15 February.

The Southern Field Days is a non-profit incorporated society run by previous and current members of the Eastern Southland Young Farmers Club. All members are volunteers, apart from the secretary and caretaker, and work in the agricultural industry. Chairman Logan Evans farms at Mandeville and is in his second term as president.

Wherever possible, other non-profit groups within the local community, such as clubs, schools, and PTAs are used to help set up and run the event, which acts as an important fundraiser for them.

The Southern Field Days were first held in 1982 on Ken Bowmar’s property at Waimumu and featured 60 exhibitors, with the focus around working demonstrations. The event now owns 57 hectares of land and the last event saw more than 700 exhibitors, from New Zealand and Australia and two from Europe, and 40,000 people through the gates.

The Fendt 1000 range will be showcased at Southern Field Days, offering a chance to view this impressive offering in the 400–500hp tractor sector.

Ideal for cropping and forestry and high speed on-road applications (top speed 60km/hr), the Fendt 1000 range features the latest technology, guidance system, documentation, and Variotronic implement control. This will be the first public showing of a 1050 in New Zealand.

Farm Trader’s Brent Lilley managed a sneak peek at the latest Claas Arion releases, hot off the water into New Zealand – a six-cylinder all-new 600 range and a four-cylinder 400 range.

Arion 400

The 400 range boasts six models delivering between 90 and 140hp. The new FPT 4.5L four-cylinder engine, with common rail injection and a turbocharger, meets tier 4 final standards simply with the use of AdBlue. The completely redesigned cab has an impressive panoramic windscreen (no front crass beam) giving unrestricted view when using the loader.

Controls in the cab have been simplified, with many now found on the joystick on the right-hand armrest for ease of operation when using the loader, along with some clever features such as smart stop and the fully automatic HEXACTIV powershift mode.

The 600 range includes four models from 145 to 185hp, equipped with a six-cylinder DPS engine that meets tier 4 final standards, thanks to a combination of EGR, DPF, and AdBlue. All models can either be equipped with a well proven HEXASHIFT powershift or the custom designed CMATIC continuously variable transmission.

For the first time, there is now a choice of three operating systems: the simple CIS system with mechanical spools and CIS front pillar display; CIS +, which uses electric spools in combination with the CIS display; and the impressive CEBIS system with a 12-inch colour touchscreen and CMOTION multifunction controller on the right hand armrest. All new models can be fitted with the PROACTIV front axle suspension as well as four post mechanical cab suspension.

Duncan Ag

Duncan Ag is showcasing the Alstrong Aerator at Southern Field Days. The Irish-built aerator offers a three-metre working width and a forward speed of up to 20km/hr. The large drum (with 15cm blades) can break up soil pans and shatter the soil structure to a depth of 30cm when used in dry conditions at the correct speed.

Also onsite will be the Duncan DD45 Folding Double Disc Direct Drill. This original build was a custom unit three years ago, but strong enquiry for the machine from both New Zealand and Australia has seen it included in the Duncan Ag range as a standard model.

The DD45 has a double disc set-up with a unique scalloped disc, which leads a plain disc to open up the seeding slot. The machine is designed to give excellent ground penetration and trash handling ability while delivering seed evenly on all terrain.

The Kuhn FBP 3135 with film binding will be unveiled at the Southern Field Days, aimed at helping farmers and contractors maximise silage quality. The Kuhn FBP 3135 baler wrapper combination was awarded Machine of the Year (forage harvesting) at Agritechnica. Its patented Kuhn film binding system reduces film consumption (and therefore costs) by 30% compared to wide mantle film.

The specially adapted bale chamber and transfer system sees the loading arms of the bale transfer system equipped with smooth rollers to prevent film damage during the bale transfer. To create a perfect bale seal, film binding is combined with 3D wrapping and Intelliwrap.

The Fieldmaster’s GMM series can be viewed at Southern Field Days. The GMM is a gear driven rotary mulcher, topper, and slasher all in one. This is achieved by changing the blades to suit the application. Manufactured in Pukekohe, New Zealand, these machines feature a European driveline and cam clutch complete with a two-year driveline warranty.

South Island-based and family-owned and operated Ikon Machinery is featuring an impressive range of Köckerling cultivation and seeder machinery at Southern Field Days, as well as Siloking wagons and Larrington trailers.

Farmers and contractors can check out the new Valtra SmartTouch armrest in action at Southern Field Days, installed on a Valtra tractor, as well as a ‘portable’ unit for customers to operate. The Valtra SmartTouch armrest brings the latest design and engineering, with intuitive settings all easily accessible at just a tap or swipe.

The menu is easy to navigate and logically set up with swipe gestures. All settings are automatically stored in the memory. From any control, the user can control any hydraulic service, including front and rear hydraulic drives, front and rear linkages, and the front loader.
