Farm Trader headed to Cambridge for the Agrowquip Drive Green Challenge that featured the latest offerings from John Deere

The recent Agrowquip Drive Green Challenge held in Cambridge was a sea of green, from the grass to the machinery, featuring the latest offerings from the John Deere range in action.

Hosted by AGrowQuip NZ, the annual event included a wide range of tractors, ride-on mowers, Gator utilities, and compact tractors to try out.

With most rural properties having lawn to look after, a ride-on mower often takes pride
of place in the shed. John Deere’s selection of mowers includes zero-turn and front-mounted mowing units.

On-site were the updated 5 Series tractors with new styling to match the bigger brothers, 6, 7, and 8 Series. The Series 5 is suitable for smaller dairy farms, drystock, and vineyard operations wanting 85–125hp compact machines.

Options range from the E, M, and R models (from open operator platforms to fully enclosed cabs). A variety of transmission options are used on the different models, with the R models Command8 transmission offering eight clutchless shifts in four ranges.

A cab as well as front suspension are options, should you require the extra comfort for long days on the tractor. Designed to take front-end loaders, the short wheel base makes these 5 Series tractors incredibly versatile.

Alongside tractors and mowers, the line-up of side-by-side John Deere Gators were available. The team had set up a short track, mostly to allow some fun demonstrating the RSK 860i petrol sporty ‘work’ side-by-side. With a CVT transmission, these side-by-sides are easy to operate.

Using an Italian-designed petrol motorcycle engine producing 62hp, the RSK has a top speed of 96km/hr. Functional on farm with seating for two, automotive styling is used on the doors, dash, and lighting.

Storage is provided up front with a lockable glovebox and additional under the hood storage. The rear tray carrying capacity of 181kg and tow rating of 544kg should be enough to haul whatever you need around the farm for daily tasks.

Independent suspension with anti-sway bars (front and rear) and an Ackermann steering rack and pinion system provide a superior feel and ride while operating, as well as minimise wear on tyres and bearings. Power steering is an option, making the RSK 860i the ultimate in off-road handling and power.

Possibly of more interest to the farming community is the Gator, kitted up with a Star Fire receiver, Greenstar display, and Auto Trac steering to demonstrate the possibilities offered in the precision farming sector for older tractors or other machines such as the Gator, without needing to upgrade the whole tractor.
