Farm machinery history in the Opotiki district

Farm machinery has played a key role in forging the history of rural NZ. Viv Haldane popped in to check out some of the machinery once used around the Opotiki district.

No visit to the Bay of Plenty town of Opotiki would be complete without a trip to the Opotiki Heritage and Agricultural Museum.

The former Road Services Depot houses three floors of different collections, including pre-European, Maori history, shipping, and an extensive display of high-quality images.

Twelve themed rooms offer a snapshot of what life was like in the past. Some visitors will recognise familiar objects while others may scratch their head in wonder as to how, why, and what?

Pre-visit, I was told, “Don’t go expecting fancy pants interactive displays; this is a small town whose museum is run by volunteers and donations. It has an honest, old school charm.”

The museum is spic and span and a tribute to the hard-working team of volunteers.
