Get some red in your shed

Choice is a beautiful thing and in the new 5M Series lineup from Massey Ferguson, you are certainly spoilt for choice with six models in two frame sizes from 95hp up to the new, range-topping 145hp model.

All are equipped with a fourcylinder engine and Brake-toNeutral. Options expand versatility thanks to factory-fitted additions, typically found on larger, more complex tractors. Along with ISOBUS connectivity, MF Guide and a wide range of other Smart Farming options (section control, auto guidance, etc), the 5M Series still retains the straightforward, robust design that reminds me so much of the mid 1990’s 300 Series Massey Ferguson tractors.

ENGINE
Massey Ferguson’s 5M series, regardless of the model, is powered by a 4.4L, 4-cylinder Tier 3 AGCO Power engine.

This still includes common rail fuel injection and is turbocharged, with peak torque at a low 1500rpm in line with AGCOs overarching low-rev engine philosophy.

MODEL RANGE

As mentioned, there are two frame sizes. The 5M. 95, 5M.105 and 5M.115 are the smaller 2.43m wheelbase, while the
5M.125, 5M.135 and 5M.145 models are the larger 2.620m wheelbase. At the risk of confusing you, there is some added nuance here also. The 135 and 145 are available cab-only. The 145 only comes with the Dyna 4 transmission, while the
95 is only available in the 12×12. The 5M. 95-125 are all available in either cab or ROPs. The 105-135 are available with
12×12 or Dyna-4. Clear as mud? Good.

TRANSMISSION

Again, plenty of options here folks: choose from the 12×12 vs 16×16 Dyna-4 – a delightful dilemma.
If we start with the more basic 12×12, this gives two ranges (H/L) and six on the stick with a fancy de-clutch button. But if you like your drive with a touch of sophistication, the 16×16 Dyna-4 will have you smiling like you’ve just found a twenty in your oilskin. Offering four ranges and four powershift steps in each range, with no clutching needed between them, and a left-hand Power Control lever that lets you shuttle, shift, and neutral all with a flick, it’s another well-proven design in the New Zealand market.

OTHER TRANSMISSION FEATURES WORTH MENTIONING:
• Speed-matching selects the best Dynashift ratio when shifting range
• Left-hand Power Control lever
• T-Lever or Convenient loader operation, electric joystick is available as a factoryfi tted option for more precision
• Comfort Control allows shuttle aggression adjustment for smooth though to rapid shuttling
• Brake to neutral
• Eco-mode to drive at 40 km/h at 1850 rpm

OPERATOR STATION
Climb aboard the 5M and you’re met with a cab or open station, each with its own distinct flavour. Controls remain
well-positioned. The MF 5M Series offers ease of use and comfort, particularly for tasks requiring a loader complete with pivoting front guards. The 5M can be factory loader ready for the Massey Ferguson-branded (Quicke) MF FL.4121 loader as was the case on our test 5M135.

The MF 5M can also be specified with an electric joystick, ideally located on the seat armrest. This will have a familiar feel for Massey Ferguson enthusiasts. The cross-lever controls main loader functions as well as third service, travel direction changes and engine speed memory.

The Visio Roof option provides outstanding visibility for stacking bales or loading trailers at height. It’s a nice addition for a tractor this size and is even equipped with sun-protected glass to keep the operator cool and safe.

In the field, between the electric joystick, the loader and Dyna-4, the controls feel slick, with seamless gear changes that even the most ham-fisted operator like me can manage. Th e Power Control lever is particularly handy for loader work, leaving the right hand free to operate the loader or implement hydraulics – all good stuff folks.

PTO
The 5M Dyna-4 variants are equipped with a 3-speed 540/540E/1000rpm PTO as standard on Dyna4 Models (an optional upgrade exists for 12×12 models from the 540/540E). Control is via an electronic switch with a nice gentle soft start ‘easing’ the engagement to protect the driveline by gradually taking up the drive. This comes as standard on both the ROPs and cab models, as does electronic speed selection – both very nice inclusions.

LINKAGE

This well-proven electronic control system has a simple slider on the right-hand console and buttons on both rear mudguards for easy external implement hitching. Capacities do vary slightly based on wheelbase. It’s 4300kg on the 5M 95-115 models with Cat 2 hook ends and 5200kg on the 5M 125-145 models, with Cat 3 rear linkage. Either option will provide ample muscle to handle heavy-mounted equipment with ease.

HYDRAULICS

Two gear pumps provide the flow of fluid around the 5M range. Flow rate of 58L/min provides the muscle for the rear linkage, while an additional 42L/min of flow is provided for the 2 standard or 3 (optional) rear spool and mid-mount valve. With the flick of a switch the pumps can be linked to deliver 100 litres/min oil flow, making the higher flow rate available to provide extra speed and power for loader operations or constant spool demand.

SUMMARY

With loader-ready smarts, whether you’re stacking bales sky-high under the Visio Roof or fine-tuning PTO engagement with a gentle touch, it delivers on all fronts.

Hacking into the matrix with high tech ISOBUS, section control and auto steering with the snazzy armrest mounted joystick or ROPs for open air living, the Massey 5M has features fi t for all sorts of Kiwi paddocks.
