If your tractor hasn’t been on a strict creatine diet and isn’t up to handling the triple mower big daddy of the SaMASZ range, then the SaMASZ KT 341H is something you’ll want to check out
It’s what I would call a mid-range machine; suitable for a smaller contractor, especially if teamed up with a front mower. Alternatively, it would suit an average-sized dairy farm for either topping or silage mowing.
Conveniently, the horsepower requirement isn’t high by modern tractor standards, requiring as little as 105hp. If you add hills and an optional conditioner, more horsepower is required naturally. The KT 341H has an additional disc to the 3m model, which allows working capacity to increase by half a hectare to 4ha/hour. Add one extra module to give the 3.4m cut doesn’t incur a lot of difference price-wise considering the benefits.
Operation
Right: The nifty knifty carrier
The SaMASZ KT model mowers such as the machine we used at our Harvest Showcase are the gear-driven models, a step up from the base KDT mowers made by SaMASZ that are belt-driven.
Personally, I would go for the slightly higher initial price for peace of mind and reliability in the longer term. The ‘H’ in the model’s name stands for ‘Hydro-pneumatic suspension’, which only requires one double-acting and one single-acting hydraulic remote to operate – less than the mechanical spring-suspended model.
SaMASZ has made it super easy for mounting, fitting colour-coded Kennfixx couplers to each hose, so it should be right first time, every time. Using the in-cab controller, ground pressure can be adjusted on the move without stopping and getting out to ensure the perfect cut every time – as the name of the cutter bar suggests. With the in-cab controller linked to the hydraulic suspension system, you have a visual gauge on the headstock to check. In time, you would probably work out a range of what suits your conditions.
Mower bed
Right: The red latch covers transport, working and storage positions
The cutter bar of this model is the same as all SaMASZ machines bought into New Zealand by FarmShop – the PerfectCUT.
Quick change knives (16 on this model) are standard as you would expect, with the tool kept at the headstock. At the manufacturing stage the bars are all pressure tested to ensure they are going to ‘cut the mustard’ as they say.
Fitted from factory with wear plates on the inner and outer skids, it can also be optioned with extra skids for topping to get more value out of your mower and void needing two mowers to do different jobs. Should things go badly, and your mower strikes something it shouldn’t, the hydraulic breakaway is designed to swing back and up to clear the obstacle, to prevent damage to the knives/modules/cutter bar, and then auto reset. If that is not enough, and for some reason a module takes the brunt of a collusion, a $5 keyway should shear, preventing major damage to the module or total replacement. Being covered by a two-year warranty gives you peace of mind, plus a full range of parts are stocked by FarmShop, with service guys at the workshop, on the road and a dealer/service network across the country to ensure you are back up and running ASAP should anything go pear-shaped.
Headstock
With the breakaway system pivoting from the centre of the tractor-mounted headstock, SaMASZ has been able to make use of this to offer three different transport positions: folded up from the side, folded up from the rear or folded out to the rear. In my opinion, this last one isn’t great on the road, but it does offer a great option for compactly putting away in the shed and being more evenly balanced when unhooking from the tractor’s linkage arms, which traditionally can be a hassle.
Build quality
Having only had a brief look at the SaMASZ range at National Fieldays up until now, on closer inspection, it is clear they are very well built. The quality is evident throughout, and the use of thick steel and gussets, where any potential weak points may be, ensures it is made to go the distance.
Added to this, SaMASZ uses a full seven-step automotive-style paint process to keep the mower looking its best for years to come. This was evident in the SaMASZ grouper mowers we also used at the Harvest Showcase; these are still looking like new after two seasons and hundreds of hectares of mowing.
Summary
I was pleasantly surprised by the quality and performance of the SaMASZ range of gear, and having had the opportunity to spend some decent time with the KT 341H mower, it was certainly time well spent. There’s no doubt they are up there with most of the other big players in terms of product, and it’s well worth investigating or arranging a demo if you’re in the market for a new mower for next season.
