Valtra is expanding the N and T Series with Direct models featuring a continuously variable transmission, and Versu models featuring a multi-step powershift transmission
- Spacious cab
- Simple to use
- Stepless transmission
- Five-speed Powershift
- Hydraulic output
- TwinTrac reverse-drive systems
- Standard load-sensing hydraulics
Designed and manufactured in-house by Valtra, the new transmissions are essentially the same in both the stepless Direct and multi-step powershift Versu models.
Powershift steps on the five-speed transmission are shifted using three buttons situated on the driver’s armrest. With the stepless transmission, the driver selects the gear range using a lever, the speed using the throttle pedal and the direction using the forward/reverse shuttle, operated with the left arm.
Both Versu and Direct models are fast and efficient working in reverse using their TwinTrac reverse-drive systems. The Versu model also offers creeper speeds as standard.
The new transmissions are also efficient. A 50kmh transmission and fuel-conserving EcoSpeed function are also available.
More power and torque
The four-cylinder N series are powered by AGCO Sisu Power’s (former Sisu Diesel) 4.4L and 4.9L Tier 3 4 Valve common rail engines while the larger six-cylinder T series are powered by the 6.6L and 7.4L variation. All these models have slightly more power and five to 17 percent more torque than their previous corresponding models. Torque rise has been increased considerably compared to earlier models.
All Versu models are also available with transport boost for additional power on roads, while the biggest models have the Sigma Power for heavy PTO work to provide that extra bit of boost in tough conditions.
The new tractors come with load-sensing hydraulics as standard. The standard output is 115L/min, but a 151L/min pump is available for demanding implement combinations. The hydraulic and transmission oils are separate. Heat exchange occurs between the two oils, allowing the transmission oil to heat up the cold hydraulic oil – perfect for cold New Zealand winters, which in turn cools the hot transmission oil during road transport.
Heavy duty three-point linkage and an industrial front axle with brakes are available for demanding tasks. The HD linkages have a lifting capacity of 8.5 tonnes and are available on T182 and T202 models. The industrial front axle can be specified on both the N and T series, and on the T series it features optionally two brake discs per side. The T series is available with either a 5-tonne or 3.5 lift front linkage. Either linkage can be fitted together with the “Aires” air bag front axle suspension, and the 35kN linkage can also be fitted together with a front loader.
When using a front loader, a the all-new “Hydraulic assistant” feature automatically increases rpm to help loading work in Direct models without changing ground speed.
The new Versu and Direct models provide easy access to daily inspection points.
Enhanced driving comfort
The new T and N series Versu and Direct models can be most easily identified by their new engine covers and rear mudguards. The new T series also has a new cast-iron frame and separate fuel tank.
New air vents improve engine cooling, while the new rear mudguards keep the entrance to the cab clean.
Without gear levers the cab is noticeably more spacious than before. The upper and lower side panels have also been redesigned to make them more user-friendly. Despite the optional automatic air conditioning system, it is now possible to open the side window.
Owner says…
Two new Valtra Versu tractors are providing a busy contracting business extreme comfort and a range of high-quality operating features.
Merv McCabe and his son Dave run North Otago Ditching and Baling, and Merv also owns the local Valtra dealership, North Otago Ag Centre. They have operated Valtras for 10 years and currently run 12 models in their contracting business. They purchased two new Versu T202 tractors in December.
“We’re absolutely rapt with them,” Dave McCabe says.
“With this range, Valtra has moved ahead of the older T series tractor, which had three-speed Powershift. The Versu has five-speed Powershift with the range change on the go.”
Dave says with the stepless transmission, the driver selects the gear range using a lever, the speed using the throttle pedal, and the direction using the forward/reverse shuttle, operated with the left arm.
“The five-speed Powershift is fantastic and makes operation in the paddock even easier.
“We have 20 forward gears, which you can go through all on the move. I was rapt with the way my last T series 191 performed with just a three-speed Powershift, but this is even better.”
One of the new 210hp Versu tractors is used to pull a baler in the contracting operation, while the other is fitted with full dual wheels and is used for a range of cultivation jobs, including towing a seven-furrow reversible plough, a 5m power harrow, 4m discs and various drills.
“For cultivation work and pulling the reversible plough I’ve found the Versu to be very user friendly,” Dave says. “Everything is located on the armrest and you’re not all round the cab like an octopus. Everything is at your fingertips.”
