Get pedalling for Pedal4Prostate at Hampton Downs

Farmers are being encouraged to swap their farm bikes for road bikes and start training now for the third annual Pedal4Prostate at Hampton Downs on Sunday, 13 October 2019

Last year, the 196 cyclists who took part raised more than $137,000 for the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Organisers are hoping for an even bigger turnout this year.

Prostate Cancer Foundation CEO, Graeme Woodside, says, "The money raised goes towards increasing awareness and funding research into one of the country’s most prolific cancers that kills more than 600 New Zealand men each year.

"It’s such a fun event for what is a very serious issue and we use it to inspire Kiwi men to take control of their health and get tested, as early detection is key to saving lives.

"Last year, the enthusiasm from the participants was amazing and this year we are hoping to have many more riders on the track."

Following the success of the previous two years, the event remains open to teams of two to four riders (or super-fit individuals) along with the introduction of two new categories – E-Bike and Over-60s.

On offer is a range of prizes for individuals and teams, as well as the major prize – a trip for two to Hawaii for the entrant who raises the most funds. Pedal4Prostate is open to everyone over the age of 16 and welcomes all levels of riding experience. Registrations for the event are open now so get yourself or your team entered and start fundraising well ahead of the big day.

This year’s event also welcomes a new major sponsor, New Zealand Crane Hire. Managing director, Deane Manley, says, "We are proud to be able to support such an important event and worthy cause.

"We all know someone that has been affected by the disease and as part of such a male-dominated industry, we know it’s so important that we do our part to help raise awareness for prostate cancer and help break the stigma around regular testing," he says.
