JCB unveils 457S agricultural wheeled loader
With a category-leading power-to-weight ratio of 14hp to every tonne, JCB says its new 457S agricultural wheeled loader is the undisputed king of the clamp for on-farm material loading, handling, or spreading

The new flagship of JCB’s range of agricultural wheeled loaders features Stage V emissions control technology, new transmission with selectable torque converter lock-up, heavy-duty axles, and a new rear chassis.
Claas Harvest Centre product manager – JCB, Steve Gorman, says the high-capacity loader sets new benchmarks for productivity, efficiency, and comfort in demanding agricultural conditions.
The 457S is powered by a 6.7-litre six-cylinder Cummins B6.7 engine that delivers a maximum output of 282hp and a peak torque of 1200Nm.
This is combined with a new six-speed automatic/manual powershift with a top speed of 40km/h.

"The torque converter lock-up provides direct mechanical drive in all six forward gears as standard," Steve says.
"Alternatively, the operator can select the lock-up for the three lowest forward gears or any of the three reverse gears to suit different applications.
"For less demanding applications, the operator can revert to the standard power output of 224hp to reduce fuel consumption.
"In addition, the engine automatically shuts down after an operator-specified idle period, further reducing fuel consumption."
The cooling system automatically adjusts the speed of the large hydraulic fan according to the ambient temperature, while the automatic fan reverse function prevents the build-up of dust, chaff, and debris.
The 457S is available with either standard or high lift arms, which provide a maximum lift of 4.3 or 4.8 metres at the attachment pivot pin, respectively.
"The non-parallel lift links allow the attachment to roll back when the loader arms are raised for improved load retention," Steve says.
"The loader arms have unloaded spool valves, which allows them to lower by gravity for increased productivity and reduced fuel consumption.
"The arms can also be equipped with two auxiliary services to allow a wide range of attachments to be used with the loader."
Implements are quickly attached via the hydraulic quick hitch.
An optional 20-tonne rear hitch, twin-line hydraulic or air-ready trailer brakes and integrated camera further increase the loader’s versatility.
Two high-flow hydraulic pumps ensure fast cycling times and multifunctioning capability.
JCB’s patented Smoothride load suspension dampens shock, reducing material spillage and structural stress, as well as increasing operator comfort.
The 457S maintains a three-metre width, even when fitted with 710/75R32 Trelleborg TM2000 traction tyres.
Alternatively, it can be fitted with 800 mm Michelin XHA 23.5 R25 L3 radials for hard surface operations.
The new heavy-duty 20-stud axles can be equipped with limited-slip or auto-locking differentials for optimum traction in all operating conditions.
Steve says the 457S incorporates a number of smart design features for easy operation and servicing.
"For example, the rear chassis has a re-profiled counterweight that increases the loader’s departure angle and protects the rear lights and cooling pack from damage," he says
"The 400-litre fuel and 135-litre hydraulic tanks are integrated into the chassis for added protection and strength.
"The diesel and diesel exhaust fluid tanks are easily accessible via the lockable grille at the rear of the machine.
"The large single-piece bonnet provides easy access for the engine.
"Likewise, the fan assembly swings out to give quick and clear access for cleaning the radiator matrix."
The 457S features the spacious JCB CommandPlus cab, which provides all-round visibility and well-laid-out, easy-to-use controls, including a full-colour LCD display and a single-lever joystick.
The optional Contractor Pro pack adds 360-degree LED lighting, twin beacons, a deluxe seat, carpet, and a stainless-steel exhaust stack.
All JCB machines are constructed using advanced manufacturing techniques, including robot welding and precision painting.
"Precision machining techniques ensure high tolerances and accurate location of pins and bushes," Steve says.
"For example, the articulation joint has a heavy-duty box section, centre pin, and oversized bush, as well as twin taper roller bearings on the bottom box joints.
"This design can tolerate both vertical and horizontal loadings for durability and rigidity.
"Likewise, the steering rams are positioned high up to protect them from possible impact, while the hoses are neatly routed and clamped through the articulation joint, well away from any pinch points."
