As demand for smaller and versatile tractors continues to be important for smaller operators, the LOVOL brand brings some fresh choice to the market, plus comes with plenty of extras
There may be some eagle-eyed compact tractor enthusiasts who think the current LOVOL tractors represent a striking resemblance to the Foton tractors of old – they are correct. Originally imported under the Foton Eurolepard label, before a name change to Foton LOVOL, before the whole LOVOL business was sold by Foton to its current parent company, they are now represented in market as the LOVOL machine you know and love today.
Having said that, this change hasn’t just involved a lick of paint and a sticker change. There are several carefully considered changes and updates as the brand establishes itself in the market. The engine manufacturer/brand is XINCHAI. In order to find out more about the 2025 TB504C, we checked out one already at work on a Kiwi property.
Engine
Our test tractor this time around is a 2022 LOVOL TB504C, equipped with a 3.2L, 4-cylinder, Tier 2 engine, with a maximum 50hp at a rated 2400rpm. We headed to the Far North to check out how it was performing after 18 months of ownership and discovered that it has certainly been up to the task for owner Ral Makiha, who uses the machine on multiple properties. In fact, this was one of the main reasons for purchasing the LOVOL combo package with the assorted implements all included.
Hydraulics
One of the standout features of the LOVOL TB504C is its advanced hydraulic system. The hydraulic system has a maximum lifting capacity of 1400kg (at suspension point) from the three-point linkage system and a maximum two rear hydraulic remotes (although two spools is what is usually spec’d from factory and is on our test machine). The 2025 model will have force down lower linkage as a new upgrade. This, combined with the two-speed PTO (540/760), ensures versatility and ease of use with the various attachments.
Cabin
The cab of the LOVOL TB504C feels large and spacious for this size tractor and has plenty of the mod cons including adjustable seating, easy-to-reach controls, and excellent visibility (thanks to the four-pillar design). Being in the winterless north, thankfully the aircon blows very cold, but for those in less balmy climates, a heater is also fitted. An up spec’d grammar seat and smooth and light power steering rounds out a pretty comfortable and smooth machine to drive.
Build quality
You don’t really need me to tell you about the build quality, as LOVOL stand behind their tractors for an impressive three years (or 2000 hours, whichever comes first). As a standard new tractor warranty, this shows how confident they are of their product.
Dimensions-wise, the machine has a wheelbase of 1990mm, a ground clearance of 310mm – perfect for vegetable growing and general property maintenance. LOVOL use high quality Trelleborg 380/85R24 rear and 280/70R20 front tyres. The rear tyres also have wheel weights of 90kg each side (45kg x 2) and make the machine much more stable during loader operation.
Speaking of the loader, the Euro Hitch, self-levelling loader has all the good things, including an in-cab joystick and third service for the 4n1 bucket included in the package. The new 2025 models are equipped with green glass windows to mitigate UV heat.
Transmission
In the transmission department, the LOVOL features a 12 forward + 12 reverse shuttle shift transmission, with four gears on the stick with L/M/H ranges and synchro shuttle shift. This combined with a designed 50/50 weight distribution makes it great for loader work.
I personally do find it a little confusing having the gears 4-3-2-1 rather than a conventional 1-2-3-4 setup, but that’s because I’ve had years of getting accustomed to the first option, and like anything, you do get used to that setup quickly. Rounding out the features nicely is selectable 2WD/4WD and Diff Lock.
