European mower manufacturer SaMASZ has set a goal to be the NZ market leader in hay mower sales by 2027 and agricultural machinery specialist FarmShop is poised to make it happen
FarmShop has recently returned from SaMASZ headquarters in Poland, where the management teams fleshed out how this goal will come to light.
To be the number-one specialist in the hay mower market is a mighty goal, and working towards this, FarmShop has qualified technicians who recently trained on the floor at SaMASZ in Poland.
A nationwide roll-out of service agents is underway (supported by a dedicated 0800 SaMASZ helpline), and when customers commit to an annual servicing programme, their warranty will increase from two to three years.
SaMASZ is celebrating 40 years in business and New Zealand has been identified as one of their top five countries for growth.
“Our commitment to the New Zealand market is strong. Apart from being a market with big sales potential, it’s also an important location when it comes to modifications of our machines. Based on feedback from New Zealand, we’ve introduced, for example, new spring holder pins and modified the shape and mounting of conditioners’ tines. We’re more than open to innovations coming from this challenging market,” says SaMASZ regional export director, Lukasz Lapinski.
Achieving number one in the New Zealand market will require a high-performing machine. With a presence in more than 70 countries (including the largest exporter into France) and more than 160,000 mowers produced since its inception in 1984, SaMASZ has been a leader on the international stage. While the brand is now becoming familiar in New Zealand, many farmers and contractors are still new to its performance and aftersales promise.
As part of their commitment to customers Down Under, SaMASZ has designed customised mowers to suit local conditions. A few examples include robust and tough frames, stone-proof knife holders, replaceable stone protectors, and the development of thicker 25mm spur gears with a bevelled edge (no sharp edges to catch or break means less maintenance costs).
SaMASZ also boasts having the fastest blade tip speed of 3200rpm, which is an important factor in mower performance, as it provides a cleaner and faster cut. The quick-change blades are now longer than their initial design, which means a closer cut with no striping in the field.
The GigaCut Controller on their hydro-pneumatic models is simple to use. As well as providing excellent contour following, the PerfectCUT Cutter Bar is wider than a lot of other common mowers, which along with being strong, is excellent for straddling the pivot irrigation ruts, the brand says.
ISOBUS is also now available for the GigaCut models, enabling ‘plug & play’ machine control on the tractor’s dashboard.
With diesel prices rising, SaMASZ says their mowers can help out. Due to their main driveline being geared down, they are operated with a PTO speed of 540rpm, meaning less power requirements and less diesel needed to get the job done.
The five-stage paint process is also impressive and class-leading. Like the automobile industry, every part is shot blast, rust-treated, and given two coats of electrophoretic paint for longer life.
For contractor Steve Wood from Dargaville, SaMASZ is his go-to mower. Steve purchased the SaMASZ KDD941 Triples from FarmShop in July 2019 and showed it to the SaMASZ team when they visited New Zealand in February 2023. After grinding out more than 10,000 hectares, the condition of his mower impressed SaMASZ and Steve hopes to get another 10,000 hectares out of it.
“This is our go-to mower; it runs daily and deals with very rough acres. I’ve seen it run over many things that cockies have left in the paddocks — fence posts and so on — yet we’ve had nothing go wrong. It’s solid. Before we bought it, I made sure the parts would be available — gearbox bits, spools, etc. I even bought parts, but they’re still sitting in the shed,” he says.
The establishment of SaMASZ Dealers-Service Agents has already commenced, including four in the North Island (FarmShop for Northland, R&R Tractors for Bay of Plenty, MECH Agriculture for Manawatū, and Agtec Machinery for Wairarapa) and two in the South Island (All Farm Engineering in Canterbury and Ag & Auto for Otago). Several additional dealers are in the pipeline with a goal to saturate the country.
Meanwhile, FarmShop says they’re rolling out sharp indent prices for delivery next season and those who act quickly will be the first to own a SaMASZ mower in the striking new colourway.
